Modesto, CA – Early Morning Shooting and High Speed Collision Leave Juvenile Dead

On August 19th, 2016 at approximately 2:20 AM dispatch received the report of multiple shots fired in the area of Prescott Rd and W Rumble Rd. Shortly after, additional calls came in reporting a collision at Prescott Rd and Mt. Vernon Rd, after what sounded like vehicles traveling at a high rate of speed. 

Officers and Emergency Personnel responded and located a 1998 Honda Civic, with catastrophic damage, on the west side of Prescott Rd south of Mt. Vernon Dr. Evidence on scene suggested the vehicle was hit with gunfire at some point. This vehicle was determined to have been stolen prior in Modesto. 

Officers located the driver, a 17 year old Hispanic male Modesto resident, who appeared to have been ejected from the vehicle. Life-saving efforts were attempted however he was pronounced deceased at the scene. The victim’s name is being withheld because he is a minor and pending the notification of next of kin. The victim was transported to the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office. During the autopsy it was determined the victim had a gunshot wound in addition to the injuries sustained from the collision. 

During the investigation, witnesses described that another passenger vehicle was involved as well. This unidentified vehicle, and occupant(s), did not stay on scene. This case has been determined to be a homicide. The Modesto Police Department Traffic Unit and Investigative Services Division Crimes Against Person’s Unit are working together on this case. As a standard procedure this is a comprehensive investigation and is in the preliminary stages.
