September 05, 2016 | Ripon Police Department officers on Monday arrested 5 suspects after an attempted robbery went awry and the victim was dragged down the street by the suspect’s vehicle.

4 male juveniles and 1 male adult who were all Manteca residents were booked into the San Joaquin County juvenile hall and jail on charges that included attempted robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy and battery on a person said police Lt. Steve Merchant.

The incident occurred Monday at about 3:30 pm in front of the Ripona Market, at the intersection of W. Washington St. and Key Ave. A 19 year old male Ripon resident was reportedly speaking with the 5 suspects in front of the market. One of the suspects began assaulting the victim and another suspect attempted to take the victim’s backpack. During the assault and attempted robbery, the victim was held against the vehicle by suspects who were reportedly trying to remove the victim’s backpack. This caused the victim to be dragged down the street by the suspect’s vehicle and he suffered moderate injuries. Ripon paramedics were called to the scene to attend to the victim.

The suspects fled the scene in a tan 1996 Honda Accord. Within minutes, Ripon officers spotted the vehicle and a high risk traffic stop was conducted in the 600 block of Boesch Dr. The suspects were taken into custody without incident. The names of the suspects are being withheld at this time due to the ongoing nature of this investigation.
