MULTI-VEHICLE HIT AND RUN COLLISION RESULTING IN FATALITY IN RIPON.
On Saturday, April 22, 2017 at approximately 4:35 AM, a Modesto CHP unit encountered a multi-vehicle traffic collision on southbound SR-99, north of the San Joaquin River. The unit immediately requested medical personnel and Stockton CHP to respond.
Based on the initial investigation, it appears a 1999 Honda was parked on the right shoulder of southbound SR-99, south of Main Street, unoccupied with the hazard lights activated. For unknown reasons, a 2000 Chevrolet (driven by a 20 year old from Tracy) drifted onto the right shoulder and collided with the Honda.
After the collision, the Honda remained on the right shoulder and the Chevrolet came to rest in the #2 lane of southbound SR-99. The driver of the Chevrolet exited the vehicle and stood on the right shoulder next to the Honda.
At this time, a 2012 Volkswagen (driven by a 21 year old female from Tracy) failed to see the Chevrolet stopped in the lanes, due to looking at the pedestrian (driver of the Chevrolet) standing on the right shoulder. The Volkswagen struck the Chevrolet and both vehicles came to rest in the center median.
The pedestrian moved into the lanes of traffic and was struck by an unknown vehicle. The vehicle that struck the pedestrian immediately fled the scene and was described as a gray vehicle.
Additional vehicles may have also struck the pedestrian and fled the scene. The pedestrian succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The driver and passenger of the Volkswagen were transported to a local area hospital for minor to moderate injuries.
Alcohol does appear to be a factor in this collision for the driver of the Volkswagen but is unknown regarding the other involved parties.
This is an ongoing hit and run investigation. If anyone witnessed this collision or events leading up to the collision, please contact the Stockton Area CHP at (209)938-4800.
